The Tiger baseball team won four of its first six games and split its final eight regular season contests but in between went just 2-8, including a six-game losing streak. Add it all up and the bottom line is an 8-14 season.
“Baseball is not a difficult game,” coach Mike Winters said. “When we played good defense we were always competitive. But our inconsistency with defense, hitting and effort led to our final record.”
Winters and his staff awarded 18 players varsity letters for their
efforts this spring, including seniors Chris Meyers, Matt Roiger, Pat
Roiger, Gavin Johnson, Jake Privette and Danny Tutewohl and juniors
Nick Pierce, Taylor Wood, Matt Schmeltzer, Tyler Torgerson, Brian
Newberg, Matt Rudorfer, Nick Albano, Michael Jolliff, Justin Lavey,
Justin Tang, Cody Carlson and Tyler Landry. Senior manager Katie Daniel
also earned a varsity monogram.
Lavey and Pierce each earned all-Missota Conference recognition. Lavey
hit .347 and led the team in hits (26), runs (19) and stolen bases
(10). He also logged the most pitching innings (37.2), winning two
games and leading the team in strikeouts with 22.
Lavey won the Top Gun award given to the team’s top pitcher.
Pierce had a breakout junior season, leading the team in hitting (.393)
and on-base percentage (.486) and also took home the team’s Mr. D award
for his play in the field.
Tutewohl, selected the team’s Most Valuable Player, and Landry, winner
of the Coach’s Award for attitude and commitment, received all-league
honorable mention.
Winters said his team’s quick start and late rally to close the regular
season ranked as the top team highlights, with the six-game losing skid
and 0-2 showing in the section tournament the biggest disappointments.
With a large group of letter winners due back next spring, Winters is looking for an improved team in 2010.
“We’ll have a lot of guys returning,” he said. “We will need next
year’s seniors to work hard on their weaknesses and lead the way to a
fun and successful year.”
