Farmington senior Greg Werner (right) teed it up against the best high school golfers in Minnesota last week and proved what his coach Gerry Greupner knew all along: He belonged in that elite group.
Werner shot steady rounds of 76 and 77 and finished in a five-way tie for 11th place among 88 individuals at the 2009 Class AAA state meet played May 26-27 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids.
Eastview’s Joe Petrulo and Paul Moberg of Forest Lake finished as co-champions with 36-hole scores of 146.
“I just gush about Greg all the time,” Greupner said. “He probably
believes it only if he wins but he proved at this meet that he belongs
in the state’s august group of players.”
Werner, the Section 1 medalist, ranked seventh after the opening round
and could have been higher had it not been for one bad hole. He scored
a triple bogey on No. 9.
“His driver wasn’t his best friend much of the day,” Greupner said, “but he played very well in spite of it.”
The second day was a bit more of a challenge, but Greupner said his senior leader was up to the task.
“Greg would get in trouble and sometimes he would take a bogey or a
double but then he would come back and grab a string of pars,” he said.
Werner, who is headed to Minnesota State-Mankato to play golf next
fall, finished strong, sinking birdie putts on two of the final three
holes.
