Northfield debunked the old sports adage that says beating the same time three times in a season is tough task.
The Raiders capitalized on three Farmington errors to defeat the Tigers 5-3 in the third round of the losers bracket at the Section 1AAA section tournament played May 26 at Todd Park in Austin.
Northfield defeated the locals 5-1 and 8-7 during the regular season.
The loss knocked the Tigers out of the double-elimination tournament
and left them with a season record of 14 wins and 11 losses.
“It was tough not beating them (Northfield) once this year,” Farmington
coach Heather Ballstadt said. “I knew we could beat them but every time
out we had a least three errors and you can’t beat a good team like
that with that many errors.”
Farmington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a triple by Sam
Jensen and a single by Sarah Gunderson but the Raiders answered
immediately with an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
Sydney Silk’s RBI single in the fourth gave the visitors another brief
lead but once again Northfield responded, this time with three scores
in the bottom of the inning.
Singles by Kirstee Rotty and Jensen and a sacrifice fly by Gunderson
cut the Northfield lead to 4-3 in the fifth before the Raiders added an
insurance run in the bottom of the inning.
Farmington outhit the winners 6-3 with Jensen leading the way with a three-hit day. Gunderson drove in two runs.
Pitcher Amada Karpi allowed just three hits while striking out three, walking two and giving up three earned runs.
“The seniors stepped it up for their last game,” Ballstadt said. “Sarah
(Gunderson) and Sidney (Silk) drove in all of our runs. Amanda (Karpi)
pitched a good game and Kirstee (Rotty) scored that last run.”
