Anyone who knows anything about golf will tell you to head into the clubhouse at the first sign of lightning on the course.
But Lightning will be unavoidable at the Class AAA state tournament June 2-5.
The Eastview boys team, along with Sara Detlefsen and Kristi Opatz, will be at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
Last year, Eastview had one individual qualify. This year there will be eight.
The boys team won the Section 3AAA meet at Bunker Hills on May 26, finishing 15 strokes ahead of Rosemount and Eagan in a second-place tie.
It was a team effort with Chris Kotosky carding 148, four strokes out of first, and Joe Petrulo nailing down a 150. Max Tylke was two strokes behind Petrulo and Drew Bjordal was four behind. Kyle Nesheim and Sam Christian also qualified.
Ninth-grader Detlefsen has already accomplished more than most seniors.
She won the Section 3AAA tournament by three strokes. She’ll be joined
by Opatz, who placed fifth.
Detlefsen has already gathered many medalist honors in meets featuring
teams such as Burnsville and Lakeville North. She won four Lake
Conference titles this season.
The girls team almost qualified for state, finishing in second place behind Woodbury.
Even though Detlefsen is just a ninth-grader with three more years left
of high school eligibility, she’s not going to Bunker Hills to
sightsee.
“Sara has the game to do in Class AAA what her sister, Katie, did in
Class A and win four straight state titles,” her coach Bob Boldus
said.
Even though she’s one of the youngest players on the team, “Sara has
been an inspiration to other members of the team and a true team
player,” Boldus said. “Helping with their swings and showing and
teaching new shots to teammates is a daily occurrence for Sara.”
Sophomore Opatz scored eight shots better than she did at last year’s section tournament.
Other qualifiers
Fellow Lake Conference golfers Kara Peterson of Eagan and Amanda Northwick of Rosemount both qualified for state.
For the boys, Charlie Heidrick of Eagan and Sam Reber of Rosemount will
each be making the trip to Bunker Hills this week. They tied for second
in Section 3AAA.
In Section 2AAA, Burnsville’s Natalie Samb earned medalist honors and
Gretchen Huhnerkoch placed second. Both expect to finish near the top
at state.
