The majority of former Farmington athletes competing in collegiate sports this fall have been football players, but Tiger alumni have also been active in other athletic endeavors on college campuses across the upper Midwest.

Katee Rotty and Mollie McMahon ran for the College of St. Benedict’s women’s cross country team while Kaitlin Mincke and Jackie Beckett, both state track meet performers for the Tigers last spring, ran for the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State, Mankato respectively.

A pair of former FHS golf standouts, Patti Serdar and Greg Werner, saw fall action for Minnesota State, Mankato and ex-Tiger Kate Otten was a hitter for the women’s volleyball team at Central Methodist University in Missouri.

Former Tiger tennis standout Sam Shoberg not only had a productive on-court season for the St. Catherine’s University women’s tennis team but recently also received a 2009 Scholar-Athlete Award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for attaining a minimum 3.50 grade-point average.

Here and There: It wasn’t that long ago that some ill-informed Farmington fans questioned the authenticity of the credentials of Jim Schreffler then the girls basketball coach at FHS. Schreffler left town after two seasons and has since gone on to win Minnesota Assistant Coach of the Year at Lakeville North. Last month he also learned that he will be inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame next spring. Sounds like pretty good credentials to me.

Mike Markuson, a 1979 FHS graduate, got plenty of television air time last Saturday in Mississippi’s big win over Tennessee. Markuson is the running game coordinator for Ole Miss who appears headed for another major bowl game this holiday season.

Former FHS football assistant Sean McMenomy in his first year as head coach at DeLaSalle led the Islanders to an undefeated regular season and a state tournament appearance where they lost to Class 3A defending state champion Glencoe-Silver Lake. … 1989 FHS male Athlete of the Year Matt Walter, in his 10th season as head grid coach at Annandale, guided the Cardinals to a 5-5 year, including a 4-4 run in the tough Wright County Conference.

Former Tiger and Concordia University-St. Paul athlete Janet (Brownawell) Smith coached the Faribault girls cross country team that finished seventh in the 10-team Big Nine Conference this fall. … Ex-Tiger Luke Sturm was an assistant football coach at Wadena-Deer Creek where he will assist with girls basketball this winter.

FHS athletic director Jon Summer has three head coaching vacancies to fill for the spring season, including girls golf, softball and boys lacrosse. Recent appointments include Jon Holmes taking over for Gerry Greupner in boys golf and Dan Pickens as the first-ever girls lacrosse coach. Veteran Shawn Anderson has stepped down from his head girls golf job to help Pickens with lacrosse.

With Prior Lake leaving the Missota Conference next fall, Farmington and its state-of-the-art facility have been approved to host the Track and Field Championships in 2011.

The Tiger football team will open its 2010 season with a non-conference home game against Hudson, Wis.
