An Iraq War veteran who lives in Apple Valley has been charged with a
felony after a four-hour stand-off with police on Veterans Day ended
without incident.
According to the criminal complaint:
Police were called to the home of Robert James Dunnum, 44, at 1:05 a.m. Nov. 11 regarding a domestic dispute.
Another resident in the home told police that Dunnum, who served in Iraq from 2006 to 2007, had several long guns, handguns and possibly an assault rifle in the home, and believed he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, but was not being treated because he lost his driver’s license and could not drive to his appointments.
Police attempted to contact Dunnum, who was still inside the home, but he failed to respond.
The Dakota County SWAT team was called in and nearby residents were evacuated.
Negotiators were eventually able to contact Dunnum, who allegedly told the negotiator, “I have an automatic weapon. … I can see some people down at the end of the court. I could take a poke at them if I wanted to. … I’ve got lot of pellets. I don’t want to hurt anyone but if they come in, I will.”
At 5:38 a.m., Dunnum voluntarily surrendered.
While executing a search warrant, police found six long guns, a handgun, and a large assortment and quantity of ammunition, including .50-caliber Armor piercing rounds. Police also found a 40-mm white phosphorus (flare) grenade, and an inoperable grenade in his home.
The Bloomington Bomb Squad confiscated the ammunition and grenades.
Dunnum was charged with felony terroristic threats and misdemeanor domestic assault.
If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 for the felony charge and up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine for the misdemeanor charge.
