At 26, Amber Tamblyn has already had a storied Hollywood career.
A cast member on the soap opera “General Hospital” throughout her
teens, Tamblyn scored the title role in the CBS drama series “Joan of
Arcadia” in 2003, playing a teenage girl who receives frequent visits
from God.
She went on to star in the film “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”
and its sequel, and, perhaps the ultimate cachet for a young star, she
got “Punk’d” by Ashton Kutcher and his crew in an episode of the
celebrity prank show in which she was tricked into losing someone
else’s dog.
Tamblyn has taken her experiences in Hollywood and channeled them into
her new poetry collection, “Bang Ditto.” She’ll be in town Nov. 5 to
read from “Bang Ditto” at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.
Though the event at the Burnsville PAC is technically billed as a poetry reading, there’s a little more to it than someone dryly reading verse from a lectern.
“My mom’s a guitar player, and we incorporate her songs with the poems,” Tamblyn said. “It’s sort of a cute variety show – there’s not really a term you can put on it.”
The reading also will feature a Q & A and book signing with Tamblyn.
Tamblyn’s advice to aspiring poets: Write what you know. It’s an adage she herself puts to great use in “Bang Ditto,” which includes an homage to Ethan Coen and a scathing poem about the absurd banalities of celebrity Twitter posts, a poem that clocks in, not coincidentally, at exactly 140 characters.
“I try not to write about stuff I don’t know – writing what you know is really important, especially if you have a unique take on things or a unique life’s journey,” she said. “Honesty and sincerity in your writing can be incredibly powerful.”
IN BRIEF: Actor/poet Amber Tamblyn will read from her book of poetry, “Bang Ditto,” as part of the On Stage Authors Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, 12600 Nicollet Ave. Tickets are $13 for adults, $9 for students/seniors and are available at the Burnsville PAC box office, at Ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 982-2787.
