The Minnesota Zoo’s new dolphin calf isn’t quite ready to dine on fish. For now, she’s on a steady diet of mother’s milk.

As a result, the calf’s mother, Allie, has been feasting like a king.

“We’ve been feeding Allie eight to nine times a day,” said Diane Fusco, the marine mammal supervisor at the zoo in Apple Valley. “All the calf’s milk is from Allie, and it takes a lot of energy to produce that milk.”

Born July 17, the as-yet unnamed female Atlantic bottlenose dolphin is being kept off exhibit as she bonds with her mother. She’s tentatively scheduled to go on exhibit in the fall. (more…)

Laugh-out-loud comedy has become the stock in trade of Lakeville-based community theater group Expressions!

The group’s latest production, “The Education of Angels,” promises plenty of laughs, but also delves into deeper issues, says director Maureen Carroll.

“It’s about life and death and new beginnings,” Carroll said. “It’s funny, it’s poignant, it’s a tearjerker but in a very sweet way.”

The show, which runs Aug. 6-15 at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, follows the misadventures of two angels in training (played by Bonnie Stevenson and Paul Modderman) sent to Earth to assist a bridegroom (Andrew Wilkins) having cold feet on his wedding day. (more…)
