Apple Valley youth hockey mini mites took over center ice for a team scrimmage between the 2nd and 3rd periods of the Minnesota Wild versus Edmonton hockey game at the Xcel Energy Center on December 29. The team from Apple Valley played a three minute game in front of a crowd of over 19,000.  Photos by Rick Orndorf

Ed Tousignant’s signature apparel turns into Christmas gifts

Longtime Rosemount resident Ed Tousignant was a flannel shirt kind of guy.

When the 86-year-old died on May 1, the farmer, retired employee of Apple Valley Ready Mix and former owner of a golf driving range left behind many fond memories and a closet full of flannel shirts.

After a friend of Ed’s daughter, Ellen Leidner of Rosemount, had an idea to turn those flannel shirts into a memorial of sorts, it blossomed into a family project to honor him this Christmas. (more…)


Farmington American Legion hit with 61 percent property tax hike

Hurdles keep mounting for a Farmington service organization dedicated to the community and local war veterans.

Already restructuring under Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the Farmington American Legion Post 189 restaurant will see property taxes increase 61 percent in 2012.

Taxes on the Legion’s restaurant building will escalate from $22,298 to $35,876 in 2012. The increase of $13,578 is mostly due to the Legion losing its community service organization property tax status.

The increase accompanies a market value decrease of about $20,000, and will force the Legion to pull thousands more from its charitable giving funds to keep the bills paid next year. (more…)
