The Class AA girls soccer semifinal game between Wayzata and Lakeville North took a shootout to decide a winner on Monday night at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The Panthers entered the contest undefeated but fell one shot short in a 1-0 (5-3) shoot-out loss to Wayzata.

“It’s always disappointing to lose in a shoot-out,”  co-coach Bulut Ozturk said. “It’s pretty much a coin flip, but congrats to Wayzata. They deserved it.”

The Blaze will  now play Wayzata at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Metrodome for the state title. It’s the first state final game for Burnsville since 1993.

Based on the way Burnsville played against Centennial, coach John Soderholm likes their chances. Playing on the stage of the Metrodome at state can be a little daunting.

“Our first eight, nine minutes I think we were a little nervous,” Soderholm said. “This was a wonderful way to do it. We’re happy. I think (Centennial) is a little better than the score. We knew we could do it. We kept the ball on the ground and passed it around. We’re playing really well right now.”

In the first 20 minutes, Centennial had three shots and two corner kicks, but couldn’t get anything through.

Bust nets pound of marijuana

Apple Valley man charged with felony

An Apple Valley man was charged with a felony last week after he allegedly arranged to sell a pound of marijuana to a police informant.

Police say Yonas B. Haile, 26, had agreed to sell the marijuana to an informant with the Dakota County Drug Task Force at a location in Burnsville on June 16.

The day of the scheduled sale, Task Force agents and Burnsville Police officers maintained surveillance of the area where the transaction was to take place. Officers conducted a traffic stop on Haile’s vehicle – on grounds it violated window tint laws – and found 446 grams of marijuana (about a pound) in a pink bag in the back seat, the criminal complaint said.

The Dakota County Attorney’s Office has charged Haile with one count of controlled substance crime in the fifth degree.

If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. His next court appearance is Dec. 5.
