MacPhail Center for Music opens new site in Apple Valley

MacPhail Center for Music has moved to a new, larger space in Apple Valley to accommodate its growing student population.

Formerly housed in the public charter school Paideia Academy, MacPhail has moved two blocks west to the Ryan Real Estate building at 14750 Cedar Ave. Classes started March 27 at the new site.

When MacPhail first opened in Apple Valley in 2005, the school had fewer than 25 students, but today that number has grown to more than 300, which made the move to the new location necessary, said Paul Babcock, MacPhail president.

A grand opening event is planned at the new site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2. Open to the public, the event will include student and faculty performances, an instrument “petting zoo” and mini-lessons, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

MacPhail’s new site features nine instructional rooms custom-built with the acoustics needed for music lessons, Babcock said.

And in addition to giving staff and students more space to work with, the new site also allows for expanded hours of operation, Babcock said. MacPhail now offers music instruction from 4 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, as well as 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

The school offers private lessons for all ages and ability levels on a range of instruments, as well as early-childhood music classes, Suzuki-method lessons on guitar, piano and violin, and music therapy, which uses music to promote positive change in areas such as socialization, behavior management, and speech skills, according to the MacPhail Web site.

The Apple Valley location is one of Minneapolis-based MacPhail’s two metro-area satellite locations. The other is in White Bear Lake.
